The Holy Lands-Day 6

Who knows what today is??? It’s hump day! It’s hump day in Israel too!

After the camel cameo, we took the path Jesus took as He descended to Jerusalem on the night of His betrayal and arrest. This is the view from the beginning of Jesus descent.

We passed Bethphage where Jesus chose a donkey upon which to ride into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We also passed the largest Jewish cemetery in Israel that faces the Golden Gate of the ancient city. Burials are usually free in Israel, but here Jews will pay $25-$30 thousand just to be buried here. Why so much money? They want front row seats to the coming of the Messiah. Because we believe in Jesus we have something better: “The dead in Christ will rise, and we who are alive will be caught up together with them to meet Jesus in the sky. And so we shall ever be with the Lord.” We won’t just be spectators of His coming. We will Be participators in His coming!

This 2000 year old olive tree was probably there in Jesus’ day. If only trees could talk! This particular tree has a dead stump with new shoots growing out of it. Isaiah prophesied: “A shoot will spring out of the stump of Jesse.” That shoot is Jesus!

After Gethsemane, we walked to the house of Caiaphas where Peter denied Christ three times. There was a real live rooster crowing as we were there. We saw the courtyard where Peter denied ever knowing his Savior and friend. We saw where Jesus was held in custody after He was condemned by the Sanhedrin. Here we read from Psalm 88. “My soul is full of trouble. My life draws near the grave. I am counted like those who go down to the pit. I am a man without strength... You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. You have taken from Me My closest friends. My eyes are dim with grief... But I cry to You for help, O LORD, in the morning my prayer comes before You.” This may have been the hole Jesus was lowered through into the dungeon awaiting trial before Pilate.

We stopped for lunch. I got Israeli pizza with olives on it (of course!). Then we visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher: one of two places where Jesus is believed to have died and been laid in a tomb. It was way too commercialized for my taste. I am looking forward to seeing Gordon’s Calvary - The second site for Jesus’ death and resurrection - tomorrow. One pastor in our group said this: “The important thing is that His body isn’t at either site.” He is not here. He is risen just as He said! Hallelujah!

Tonight we are going to listen to our tour guide, Avi, perform American and Israeli music with his band. He is multi-talented, and we want to encourage him. Avi has led groups for Kay Arthur for twenty years, but had yet to embrace Jesus as his Messiah. When you pray today, be sure to pray for Avi.

Blessings,

Pastor Dave
